Why am I not getting the flow rate advertised for my pump?

Adding components will affect the flow rate. For example, a longer hose/automatic nozzle or dirty filter will reduce the flow more than a shorter hose/manual nozzle or clean filter

Why doesn't my hand pump remain primed?

The pumps are designed to lose prime as a safety feature. This prevents siphoning from occurring.

Do the electric pumps need to be primed?

All GPI® and GPRO® electric pumps are self-priming.

Why is my 12-volt pump sucking air from the nozzle?

The pump is wired backwards. Check the wiring to the battery and ensure that the red wire is connected to positive and black wire is connected to negative.

My pump will not prime, what can I do?

Ensure that everything is clear of debris. Check the suction pipe, strainer, hose, and nozzle for any blockage. If the pump is equipped with a filter it may be clogged. Try replacing the filter. All of the above can cause excess backpressure. This can send the pump into bypass mode.

Another common cause of priming issues is debris in the bypass poppet valve. Find troubleshooting assistance in the product owner’s manual: GPI-GPRO OWNERS MANUALS

Do I need to use a filter with my electric fuel pump?

Use of a particulate fuel filter is recommended.

INSTALLATION / APPLICATION

What maximum hose length is recommended for my pump?

The recommended hose length is the hose that was provided with your pump. If you do add extra hose length the following things can occur:

  1. The rate of flow will be reduced due to increased backpressure (resulting from excessive hose length, or too many accessories).
  2. If the pump experiences enough backpressure, the pump will go into bypass mode (similar to a closed nozzle).
  3. We recommend using GPRO vane pumps for use with hose reels or hose lengths greater than 14 ft.
Why are the EZ-8 and GP8 not sold with an automatic shutoff nozzle? Can I use an automatic nozzle with these pumps?

The EZ-8 and GP8 are not recommended for use with an automatic nozzle. Automatic nozzles require a higher operating pressure than the EZ8 or G8P can produce. Using an automatic nozzle with these pumps may prevent the automatic nozzle from operating properly

Can I install my pump with the motor oriented vertically?

This is not recommended. The motor bearings are designed to run horizontally. Running the motor in a vertical orientation may create unusual wear of the motor armature bearings and reduce motor life.

Can I use an automatic shutoff fuel nozzle with any GPI hand pump?

  1. This is not recommended. All GPI hand pumps need to be used with an open-ended nozzle. Attempting to operate a hand pump when the nozzle is closed could result in damage to the hand pump.
  2. Automatic nozzles are designed to be used on electric pumps with continuous pressure and flow. Hand pumps do not provide constant pressure and flow which results in nozzle malfunction.
Can I use any nozzle with a GPI gear pump?

We do not recommend that non-GPI nozzles be used with GPI pumps. Our nozzles are specially designed to create the least amount of backpressure. This promotes better fuel flow and the best performance. There are many differences among nozzle brands and the results of using off-brand nozzles are unpredictable.

What’s the maximum suction lift of my fuel pump?

That depends on the model of pump you have. See the specifications section in the back of the owner’s manual for your pump: GPI-GPRO OWNERS MANUALS

Does GPI manufacture any pumps that are dual voltage rated?

Yes, the motors of the PRO35, V20, L5116, and L5132 are rated for either 115 VAC or 230 VAC. Instructions are provided in the owner’s manual to assist the installer with proper wiring for the selected voltage.

Do you have any electric pumps that work with water?

We do not currently manufacture any electric water pumps.

Can the electric pumps be mounted outside?

The fuel pumps and most of the others can be mounted outside. The exception is the Heavy Duty Oil Pumps (L5016, L5116, and L5132) which are not for outdoor use. Heavy Duty Oil Pump L5020 can be mounted outside.

I bought a 12Vdc (battery-powered) pump but want to use it with 115Vac (household wiring). How do I convert it?

This is not possible.

I bought a 115Vac (household wiring) pump but want to use it with 12Vdc (vehicle power). How do I convert it?

This is not possible.

Is the bypass pressure on my pump adjustable?

No, the bypass pressure is permanently set during pump assembly for optimal performance.

What is the difference between the M-150S-EM and the other M-150S models?

The M-150S-EM (and the M-150S-E-PO) is the Economy Model and is direct mounted. This requires the entire pump assembly to be turned to thread the pump on and off of the tank. The other pumps in the M-150 series feature a “Spin Collar” which allows you to orient the pump in the preferred direction and tighten the spin collar onto the bung adapter without turning the pump/motor. This is particularly helpful when turning the pump would collide with nearby obstructions such as a vehicle window or other structure.

Does GPI have any pumps that will work with Methanol or Ethanol fuels?

Yes, we offer several gear pumps for methanol applications. They are nickel-plated to ensure long life and trouble-free performance.

  1. 137700-01/EZ8-Methanol
  2. 12V (dc)110700-01/M-150S-Methanol
  3. 12V (dc)110700-04/M-1115S-Methanol, 115V (ac)

We DO NOT offer pumps for ethanol applications.

Are the methanol pumps available with nozzle, hose, and suction tube?

No. We do not offer these accessories for methanol. We do not have a supplier to recommend for these accessories but the internet is a great resource for locating a local supplier of methanol accessories.

Are the aviation fuel pumps available with nozzle, hose, and suction tube?

No. We do not offer these accessories for aviation fuel. We do not have a supplier to recommend for these accessories but the internet is a great resource for locating a local supplier of aviation fuel accessories.

What is the RPMs / Horsepower / Amp draw of my pump?

All UL-rated pumps have tags riveted to the pump head or motor that provide the motor specs such as Voltage, RPMs, H.P., Duty cycle, Amp draw, Hazardous Location rating, and operating temperature. This information can also be found on our website or in the owner’s manual.

When mounted to a tank in my truck, do I need to ground my pump to my truck?

To ensure safe operation, all fuel transfer systems must be properly grounded. Proper grounding means a continuous metal-to-metal contact from one component to the next, including tank, bung, pump, meter, filter, hose, and nozzle. Care should be taken to ensure proper grounding during initial installation and after any service or repair procedures. While in most cases it is not needed, a separate grounding connection is provided. See your product's owner's manual for details.

MISCELLANEOUS

Are there parts available for the 01 series meter?

Replacement parts are not offered for the 01A series fuel meter. The display needs to be matched to the turbine body, so they need to be manufactured together. It is less expensive to buy a new meter than to send a turbine body back to have a display manufactured to match it.

Can I bypass the switch on my 12V (dc) M-150S or M-180S to troubleshoot a faulty switch?

Yes. After disconnecting the pump from its power supply, remove the 3 bolts holding the switch cover plate in place. Once removed, two red wires will be visible on the left side of the switch cavity. The solid red wire must be connected to the red wire with a white stripe in order to bypass the switch. These two wires must be disconnected from the switch assembly in order to be connected. After ensuring the two connected wires will not contact any other surfaces or arc, to ensure safety, you must then reinstall the switch cover plate. The pump may be reconnected to the power supply and the motor will immediately turn on if the motor is not defective.

Can I bypass the switch on my 12VDC EZ-8 to troubleshoot a faulty switch?
